Growth of Leaves and Development of Root in Radish (Raphanus sativus L.) : Role of Gibberellic Acid

Abstract
The role and influence of gibberellic acid were examined on seedling growth throughout different stage of development during the juvenile period of small radish (Raphanus sativus L. cv. National). Growth of leaves and hypocotyl elongation of seedlings were promoted later by pretreatment of GA3 into the seed in most cases CCC promoted the growth of seedling but in some cases CCC inhibited it. Foliar spraying or root application of GA©ý (0.2§·/§¢ or 0.1§·/§¢) exerted a favorable influence on the growth of leaves and swelling of roots of small radish (cv. National) cultivated in the outdoors. and CCC(1§·/§¢ or 0.5§·/§¢) accelerated or sometimes reduced the growth ; but their effects were affected by treatment stages. Changes of gibberellin activities in extracts of small radish at different stages of leaf and root development were examined using lettuce hypocotyl bioassay. As the growth advanced, accumulation of GA- like substances were observed, a major level being found in third and fourth leaves, and in roots of 6 leaves stage, respectively. Finally, a peak of the GA activity in guttation of leaves was found at RF 0.3.
